GRAND FORKS — Grand Forks Red River coach Josh Lunak admitted this season was both stressful and fun. There was no margin for error. Three teams finished tied for the top of the East Region boys tennis regular-season standings. One of them, Fargo Davies, lost twice in the East Region tournament and didn't qualify for state. Sixth-seeded Wahpeton made it. So did eighth-seeded Valley City, which was one match away from not even qualifying for the East Region tournament. "It's been a fun year," Red River senior Kyler Bydal said. "It's been tight." The Roughriders have found a way so far. They won a tiebreaker to get the No. 1 seed in the East Region tournament. Then, they won three consecutive 3-2 decisions in the region tournament to bring home the title. Red River will be the East Region's top seed at the state team tournament, which begins at 10 a.m. Thursday at Choice Health and Fitness. State-favorite Mandan is the top seed from the West.
